Your system may protect you from change as a risk management strategy. That is, change may be viewed as avoidable risk. From your protectors’ points of view, change is not guaranteed to be positive. Protective parts are often more focused on preventing danger than on maximizing happiness, growth, or opportunity. Even painful or limiting situations may feel safer to some parts than unpredictable change because the system already knows what to expect and how to survive it.

Sometimes, some parts of the system are not aware that your situation is now different, and safer, than it was in childhood. It makes sense that they would be focused on keeping you safe, even if it meant foregoing the possibility of positive change.
