With DID, even when the body is at rest, many processes continue within the brain and nervous system. Parts may still be coordinating with each other, potential threats may still be monitored, and internal material may be filtered to keep certain memories or emotions contained when needed.

All of these processes require energy and can continue even during quiet or restful moments.
In some cases, trying to regain energy through rest can feel like trying to fill a sink while the drain is unplugged.

This page is part of the Why Is DID So Exhausting? section of the CommuniDID site, which explains the hidden cognitive and emotional effort involved in dissociation, including internal coordination, memory management, and vigilance.
