Triggers can seem random because you may not have a conscious memory connecting the cue and the trauma response. In addition, some traumatic experiences are stored as implicit memories, which are nonverbal and often held as sensory impressions rather than clear narratives.

Because these memories are not always accessible to conscious awareness, it can be difficult to recognize when one has been activated. As a result, the reaction may feel as though it appeared completely out of the blue.

This page is part of the Hidden Trauma Triggers: Why You Can Be Activated without Knowing Why section of the CommuniDID site, which explains unconscious cues, relational dynamics, and contextual triggers can activate the nervous system before you realize what triggered the reaction.
