Feeling capable one day and incapable the next is likely due to which parts are fronting or influencing the system rather than a sudden loss of ability. If your system has parts that specialize in handling work, when they are fronting or close to the front, you feel confident and knowledgeable. At other times, non-work parts might find themselves fronting or influencing the front and you feel uncertain about what you need to do or how to do it. Different parts have different skills, knowledge, tolerances, and energy levels.
Your functioning at work may be reduced due to:
- stress
- lack of sleep
- illness
- triggers
- conflict
- therapy work
- too many demands at once
You may also have invisible exhaustion from masking, switching, hypervigilance, emotional regulation, or internal conflict. Any of these can also reduce how well you function at work.
This page is part of the DID and Work section of the CommuniDID site, which explains how switching, internal disagreement, and variable capacity influence work life and explores options for disclosure, accommodations, and navigating workplace challenges safely.
