Some people with DID experience pain that comes and goes without a clear medical cause. The pain is very real, yet medical tests may come back normal.

This does not mean the pain is imagined. In many cases, it may reflect implicit or “body memory” responses connected to past injury, stress, or trauma.

These body memories can sometimes be activated by trauma-related cues that the person is not consciously aware of. When this happens, the nervous system may recreate physical sensations even though there is no new injury occurring in the present.

This page is part of the Somatic and Body-Based Symptoms in DID section of the CommuniDID site, which explains why dissociation can affect the body, including pain, sensory changes, or neurological-like symptoms, even when medical tests are normal.
