When someone comes to the realization that they have a Complex Dissociative Disorder, is it possible/common for other forms of psychological distress to get mixed up in it as a reaction to the stress? Such as triggering a serious mood episode, panic attack, psychotic episode etc. alongside it, whether it’s an acute instance or a comorbid condition. (Asking because this was my experience but I am worried the mixture with psychosis means that I am making things up, even though I’ve been on appropriate medication for a few years and the complex dissociative symptoms havent changed much, only my interpretation of them)
This was not a simple question; it could be an entire seminar, I think! There is a lot that goes into this person’s questions, but I am going to focus on what I believe is the core: I am worried that experiencing psychosis means I’m making up other dissociative symptoms.
The first thing I want to say is that I don’t have enough information to know that what you experienced truly was psychosis or if it was implicit memories involving voices or altered perceptions or flashbacks misunderstood by professionals as psychotic symptoms. This possibility can be particularly important to consider when professionals are unwilling to consider DID and OSDD as valid diagnoses.
I’m going to continue my answer with the assumption that you did indeed experience psychosis. The short answer is that even if you experienced psychosis, this does not automatically mean that your dissociative experiences were “made up.” Both can be experienced at the same time….
