Hypervigilance is the habit of constantly scanning for danger. It develops when a person’s environment is unpredictable, unsafe, or requires them to watch carefully for signs of threat.

Over time, hypervigilance can become automatic. The nervous system learns that paying close attention to people, situations, moods, or surroundings helps reduce the likelihood of harm. Because this strategy was useful in the past, the nervous system may continue using it even after the danger is gone.

The nervous system is not primarily concerned with whether a situation is actually dangerous. It is concerned with whether a situation resembles circumstances that were dangerous before. As a result, a person may continue to monitor their environment, watch for signs of trouble, or feel unable to relax even when they are objectively safe.

Like many trauma responses, hypervigilance persists because the nervous system would rather be overly cautious than miss a potential threat.
