Questions to ask yourself
If you’re unsure what you’re experiencing, these questions may help you identify whether anxiety, dissociation, or both are present.
These suggest anxiety:
Am I noticing too much?
Am I focused on danger?
Does my body feel activated?
These suggest dissociation:
Do I feel disconnected?
Is my memory becoming patchy?
Do I feel emotionally or mentally distant?
Does everything feel unreal or dreamlike?
Or ask one simple question:
Do I feel pulled into the experience or away from it?
Pulled into it → anxiety is probably playing a larger role.
Pulled away from it → dissociation is probably playing a larger role.
When it's both
Sometimes anxiety and dissociation overlap. You might experience things like:
Feeling panicked but emotionally numb
Having a panic attack while feeling unreal
Feeling an urgent need to escape while also feeling frozen or disconnected
Scanning for danger while feeling detached from your body
Having racing thoughts while also feeling mentally foggy
Feeling terrified while simultaneously feeling emotionally distant
Having a pounding heart while feeling like you’re watching yourself from the outside
When anxiety and dissociation occur together, you may recognize features of both. That’s normal. Rather than trying to decide which one it “really” is, focus on understanding what your nervous system is doing so you can choose strategies that address the experiences you’re having.
