Yes, triggers can happen even if you have no conscious memory of the original cause. This is because the nervous system “remembers” threats separately from our conscious memory.

You may not remember because you were:

  • very young
  • dissociated
  • intoxicated
  • overwhelmed
  • because another part holds the memory.

But the nervous system can still react to sounds, smells, tones of voice, places, body sensations, or other cues connected to past danger.

This is why a person can suddenly feel panicked, frozen, ashamed, unsafe, or overwhelmed without knowing exactly why. The reaction is real, even if the memory is unclear or unavailable.

This page is part of the Why Do I Get Triggered Without Knowing Why? section of the CommuniDID site, which explains how trauma associations form and why the nervous system can react automatically before you consciously recognize what caused the reaction.
