If you are wondering if therapy is actually working, consider these questions:

  • Has communication within your system improved? This might look like being able to communicate with more parts of your system, communicating with less effort, or communicating more reliably. It can also include increased cooperation or decreased internal conflict over time.
  • Is your daily functioning more consistent? You may still experience symptoms, but they may interfere less with your ability to function.
  • Are you able to recover from distress more quickly? You may still become distressed, but recovery may be faster. You might feel like you have slightly more choice or control in your responses or you may now have helpful coping strategies.

This page is part of the Therapy and Finding Safe, Supportive Healing section of the CommuniDID site, which explains how to evaluate therapists, recognize trauma-informed care, and understand what safe, phase-based DID treatment should look like.
