Many people with DID can and do work. The ability to work is strongly influenced by safety, overall stress load, and internal coordination within the system. The greater the stress load, the more difficult work may become. When a system experiences safety and productive internal coordination, it often has more capacity for work.
Whether working is realistic can also vary across different seasons of life. Some periods may allow for more work, while others may require scaling back.
Difficulty working is not evidence of failure or incapacity. It often reflects a nervous system and system that are doing their best to manage threat and maintain stability. Work may still be possible, but it may need to look different than expected.
This page is part of the DID and Work section of the CommuniDID site, which explains how switching, internal disagreement, and variable capacity influence work life and explores options for disclosure, accommodations, and navigating workplace challenges safely.
