When everything feels overwhelming, the goal is not to solve everything—it’s to help your system feel a little more stable first. Start by slowing things down and reducing the demands on your nervous system. You can do this by focusing only on the next small step, not the entire situation. Reduce stress where you can, such as moving to a calmer environment, and lower your expectations for your performance in the short term.

Take a moment to get your bearings: Where are you? What year is it? What is actually happening? Ask yourself whether you are in danger right now.

Focus on routines and predictability through simple, familiar tasks.

Sometimes, reaching out to a safe person can also help reduce the feeling of being overwhelmed.

This page is part of the Why Slowing Down Can Help Trauma Healing Move Forward section of the CommuniDID site, which explains how respecting limits, pacing emotional work, and reducing demand can protect long-term healing capacity.
