Sometimes, it’s what you don’t do that has the greatest impact on how your system functions. Certain patterns can increase stress, internal conflict, or dysregulation, even when they are intended to help.

You may be able to improve your system’s functioning by avoiding the following:

  • overriding internal system limits
  • interrogating yourself while dysregulated
  • demanding answers from alters under pressure
  • ignoring the safety concerns of other parts of the system
  • pushing for progress when your system is overwhelmed
  • trying to force agreement between parts instead of allowing time for cooperation

These patterns often increase tension within the system rather than improving cooperation.

This page is part of the Why Slowing Down Can Help Trauma Healing Move Forward section of the CommuniDID site, which explains how respecting limits, pacing emotional work, and reducing demand can protect long-term healing capacity.
