If your desired future seems unreachable, you might benefit from focusing closer to where you are now. This doesn’t mean giving up your dream. It means approaching your dream in manageable stages. If your dream was to run a marathon but you have been a couch potato, there is an enormous distance between the two points. But if you focused on first becoming a person who walks most days, you’ve already made progress toward your desired future in a way that feels doable. Your next step might be to try jogging twice a week and walking the other days, then jogging more days per week. And eventually, jogging longer distances. You might sign up for a 5k run and eventually a half marathon. From there, the idea of running a marathon seems far more possible than it did sitting on the couch.
