Agreements about suicide attempts, self-harm, and what to do during crises are something every DID system should consider. These agreements are meant to protect the system and create more safety.

Agreements might include:

  • telling another part before acting
  • reaching out to a therapist
  • calling or texting a crisis line
  • going to the emergency room
  • using coping skills first
  • delaying action for a set period of time

It may be helpful for the system to identify which parts are most at risk as well as which parts may be able to help keep the system safe.

I encourage you to have a safety plan created in advance and easily accessible in times of crisis. You can get a template you can fill in here: Stanley-Brown Safety Plan.

This page is part of the System Safety and Internal Agreements section of the CommuniDID site, which explains how systems create shared rules, crisis plans, and internal structures that support stability.
