No, dissociation is not always severe. It can range from subtle disconnection to more intense experiences like time loss or identity shifts. Milder forms can be easy to miss. Feeling spaced out, emotionally distant, or less present can be forms of dissociation that go unnoticed.

The severity of dissociation is not necessarily fixed. It may increase during stress or triggers and decrease during calmer periods.

Dissociation does not need to be noticeable to others to “count” or to cause problems. Many DID and OSDD systems work hard to keep the dissociation from being noticed.

This page is part of the What Is Dissociation? section of the CommuniDID site, which explains how dissociation works and why it develops.
