If I had to choose only one step for building cooperation in a DID system, I would choose curiosity.
Approaching their behaviors with curiosity can help you learn about the parts of your system in a way that feels supportive rather than judgmental. Instead of asking, “Why are you doing this to me?” curiosity invites questions like, “Can you help me understand what you are trying to accomplish?”
Like any of us, alters are often more willing to cooperate when they feel respected and understood.
This page is part of the How Can I Improve Communication in a Dissociative System? section of the CommuniDID site, which explains how internal communication develops and how parts gradually learn to cooperate, repair conflict, and build trust.
