Dissociation often increases when you’re tired because staying present takes energy. When you have less energy, your brain has less ability to:

  • Regulate emotions
  • Stay connected to your body
  • Track time and surroundings
  • Manage internal communication

Dissociation is one of the fastest ways the nervous system knows how to conserve resources and reduce overwhelm. Instead of processing everything, it narrows awareness. When you’re exhausted, you also have fewer resources to cope with stress, so the nervous system may fall back more quickly on familiar survival responses such as dissociation.

This page is part of the What Is Dissociation? section of the CommuniDID site, which explains how dissociation works and why it develops.
